Handling A Wide Variety Of Matters

Don’t let the Florida heat damage your ignition interlock device

Florida drivers who have been convicted of multiple driving under the influence (DUI) offenses or drivers whose first time DUI conviction involved special circumstances (like an extremely high blood alcohol level) are typically required to install an ignition interlock device (IID) on their vehicles.

An IID is a breathalyzer-type device connected to the vehicle’s ignition. A driver must blow into it to prove that they haven’t consumed alcohol before the vehicle can start. IIDs also require “rolling retests” while a person is driving to ensure they remain sober.

Many people resist getting an IID because they find it embarrassing, don’t want to inconvenience other drivers who share the vehicle or don’t want to deal with taking the vehicle in for required IID recalibrations. For many people who are mandated to install an IID, losing their license may be the only alternative option given to them by the courts.

If you have the option of getting an IID and choose to get one, it is important to understand how they work and what may cause them to report a violation. An IID is a sensitive and complicated piece of equipment, and it can sometimes malfunction.

Protecting an IID from high temperatures and sun exposure

Temperature extremes – both hot and cold – can damage an IID and cause it to malfunction or stop working completely. This may result in false reports of violations and require time and money to replace. In Florida, extreme heat and sun are factors that IID users need to worry about.

There are things you can do to protect your IID when the temperature rises. Put a sunshade on your windshield if you have to park outside. Put a sleeve or other protective covering over the IID so the sun doesn’t hit it directly. If the IID has a removable mouthpiece, take it off and keep it someplace safe. Don’t let your car battery die. While an IID shouldn’t run down a car battery, things like turning the air conditioning up full blast for an extended period can.

If you have been given the option of getting an IID, it is important to understand how to prevent damage that might cause unnecessary problems.
